About Pikeville Medical Center

Administration | Board of Directors

Pikeville Medical Center is the region's leader in the health care industry. During the past 85 years, PMC has grown into a 261-bed facility with a growing campus featuring a 555,000 square feet structure.

PMC employs over 1700 people and over 200 physicians practice here. With a progressive, supportive administration and board of directors, our employees and physicians have the tools and training they need to provide excellent quality health care. Technology, innovation, vision and finance are rapidly driving Pikeville Medical Center towards its goal of being a National Leader in Health Care

Pikeville Medical Center is home to some of the most sophisticated, technologically advanced medical equipment to be found anywhere.

Pikeville Medical Center President and Chief Executive Officer Walter E. May encourages employees to “dream big and big things will happen.”

It doesn’t get much bigger than this. This is like winning the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four or the World Series for a hospital.

Earlier this year, Pikeville Medical Center was recognized as a Hospital of Choice recipient by the American Alliance of Healthcare Providers. No other health care facility in Kentucky earned this distinction.

Earlier in 2009, Pikeville Medical Center was recognized as a Hospital of Choice recipient by the American Alliance of Healthcare Providers. No other health care facility in Kentucky earned this distinction.

To earn the ultimate honor, PMC competed against over 400 world-class hospitals, including the Mayo Clinic, the John Hopkins Hospital, Cedar-Sinai Medical Center, the Cleveland Clinic, Duke University Medical Center and Vanderbilt University. None of these hospitals have ever been named the National Hospital of the Year. None of these hospitals have been named the National Hospital of the Year.     >>   click here for more <<

State-Of-The-Art Diagnostic Equipment
PMC has invested millions to offer the most advanced diagnostic imaging equipment available anywhere. Our radiologists have access to two Siemens SOMATOM 64 slice CT scanners, and we now have the new GE Discover HD 75 CT scanner that offers unprecedented image quality.

PMC was the second hospital in the world to purchase the Fonar(tm) Open Stand-up MRI. This MRI can scan patients in a much more comfortable, less stressful environment than ever available before.

Our diagnostic imaging is now even more advanced with the addition of the 1.5 T Espree Open MRI and we are in the process of installing a 3.0 T Verio Open MRI!

In addition, the PACS system now allows physicians to have access to many of their patients' diagnostic images within seconds after they are scanned, whether the physician is in Pikeville, or on the other side of the globe.

Top quality Cancer Care

Pikeville Medical Center recently invested more than $10 million to purchase two RapidArc™ linear accelerators to treat cancer patients. One unit is already in use, and the other will be operational in April. Our cancer center routinely wins the prestigious Commission on Cancer award.

One of the Nation's Best Places to Work!

In 2009, PMC was selected as one of the nation's Best Places to Work by Modern Healthcare (click for details).

In 2007 and 2008, Pikeville Medical Center was  selected as one of the “Best Places to Work” in Kentucky.

While other healthcare organizations struggle, Pikeville Medical Center excels, and provides it's employees with competitive salaries, an exceptional benefits package, wellness incentives, supportive management and the resources they need to do their jobs more effectively.

Neurosurgery
PMC's new BrainLab system allows our neurosurgeons, Dr. Duane Densler and Dr. Norman Mayer, to track the fibers and neural pathways to plan their journey into and out of the brain. This leads to surgeries that are more accurate, more effective, safer and with less damage to surrounding brain tissue.

The Heart Institute
Pikeville Medical Center introduced Open Heart Surgery to our region in 2002. Since then, over 675 open heart procedures have been performed by world class cardiothoracic surgeons like Dr. Dennis Havens (above right). In addition, Dr. Bill Harris (above, left), one of the worlds finest, and most respected, interventional cardiologists, moved his well established practice from Lexington to Pikeville for the multitude of benefits that Pikeville Medical Center offered him as a physician.

4-D Echocardiograms
Pikeville Medical Center was the first hospital in Kentucky to offer the exceptional imaging delivered by the GE Vivid Dimension 7 "4-D" echocardiogram system. With this system, our cardiologists can virtually see inside the chambers of your heart, watch it beat, and observe the movement from almost any angle imaginable.

Digital Mammography
PMC has invested in the Selenia Digital Mammography system that allows radiologists far better imaging than previously available. This leads to earlier detection, more accurate diagnoses, and more lives saved.
