PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Hospital officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, Nov. 4 for Pikeville Medical Center’s outpatient diagnostic center, a new expansion project that houses a Stand-Up MRI as well as additional diagnostic services and a laboratory. The facility completes phase II of a four-phase plan for an off-site medical plaza.
“The continuation of this medical center to expand and add services that will benefit our patient population is very important to us,” said Joann Anderson, chief executive officer at PMC. “This is an exciting time for PMC with the many healthcare developments we are involved and we are proud of the addition of these enhanced services to the community.”
Anderson said the outpatient diagnostic center will initially provide services such as Open Stand-Up MRI and a main laboratory for routine testing. Future plans include providing digital chest X-ray and other advanced diagnostic services, including CT scanning, mammography and bone density.
“Our radiology department is highly advanced with the explosion of technology and the experience our physicians bring to this area,” explained Dr. Alex Poulos, chief radiologist at PMC. “The Stand-Up MRI is the most open and patientfriendly unit on the market. There is nothing surrounding the patient, which eliminates the feeling of claustrophobia.”
PMC President Walter E. May has been dedicated to ensuring that the medical center remains focused on bringing advanced and specialty services to the region.
“Purchasing cutting-edge technology and bringing advanced services to our patients is what sets us apart,” May stated. “Our patients expect PMC to provide quality care and convenience, and this new facility is another example of our commitment to this region. To my knowledge, we (PMC) are the second (hospital) in the U.S. to get the Stand-Up MRI. We are the first in Kentucky and the first in the South.”
May continued by crediting the physicians and staff of PMC for its rapid growth.
“We have the best here (PMC) and there’s a good reason we do,” he asserted, “we have the best people.”
A significant change patients will notice is the convenience of being able to park at and walk directly in to the outpatient diagnostic center for laboratory testing.
“From the laboratory standpoint, patients will have extremely convenient access to the facility, eliminating the need to come to the main hospital for testing,” said Debbie Puckett, PMC’s chief operating officer. “With the high volume of patients utilizing PMC for lab tests, providing a seamless process – starting with parking and continuing until the patient walks out the door – was one of our main goals.” Phase III of the medical plaza will include an outpatient physical therapy center, which is currently under construction in the riverfill parking area. This center will feature state-of-the-art equipment including a pool to be used for aquatic therapy as well as offices for physical rehab physicians. Phase IV will consist of an outpatient surgery center equipped with office space for surgeons including – but not limited to – orthopedists, neurosurgeons and general surgeons.
To schedule an appointment at the new outpatient diagnostic center, call 606-218-1000. To take a tour of the new facility, stop by any time during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
