Residency Program Philosophy

The Post Graduate Training Program at Pikeville Medical Center is based on the following concepts:

  • Effective osteopathic physicians have a mastery of skills and knowledge, which enable them to take care of the vast majority of problems in their patient population. They are efficient problem definers and prioritizors, diagnosticians, and managers serving the interest of the individual and the family.
  • Effective osteopathic physicians develop a personal style of caring for patients, communicating warmth and concern to them. They have a personal commitment to people and strive to maintain knowledge and technical skills.
  • Effective osteopathic physicians are patient advocates and teachers who represent the patient and family within the healthcare system.
  • Effective osteopathic physicians are concerned with the whole person and their environment. They are committed to the promotion of health, with an emphasis on prevention of health problems.
  • Effective osteopathic physicians play an integral role in community health care.
  • Family physicians are aware of community resources and are skilled in consultation or referral to these sources.
  • Effective osteopathic physicians develop the capacity to manage time well and to care for themselves. They learn to be nourished by family, friends, colleagues and community.
