About Dr. Zhao

Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) proudly announces the addition of Larry Zhao, MD, pathologist.

Dr. Zhao received his Doctor of Medicine from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC and his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. He completed a Surgical Pathology Fellowship at the University of California in San Francisco, and is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.

He said. “I enjoy studying the mechanisms of various diseases and conditions in this diagnostically- warranted specialty.”

He says it is very fulfilling to work with difficult cases with rare diagnoses.

“It is a great feeling to diagnose those rare conditions no one has heard of and have the opportunity to educate others about those entities,” Dr. Zhao said.

His mentor is a college advisor who taught him to always keep trying and never give up, a valuable lesson he models even today.

Dr. Zhao said, “I am a very hard working, determined individual. I am dedicated to identifying the right diagnosis in a timely fashion for proper treatment.”

He has been looking forward to his move to Pikeville, which brings him much closer to his home state of North Carolina.

“I am impressed with PMC’s leadership and organization,” he said. “I feel I can work well with PMC’s administration and talented, skilled physicians. This is a good opportunity for me.”

Dr. Zhao has been published in a well-known pathology journal, The Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and has a special interest in digital pathology and informatics. During a college summer internship, he received a copyright and patent for a voice activated data entry system.

In his spare time, he enjoys playing the violin, working out, swimming, playing basketball and table tennis, traveling and music.
