Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) has received the gold seal of distinction for hip fracture, joint replacement hip and joint replacement knee by the Joint Commission. PMC is the only hospital in the state to receive all 3 certifications.
The Joint Commission accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards.
A national surveyor for Joint Commission conducted a thorough on-site review of the practices performed at PMC.
Receiving these certifications means the Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Institute of Eastern Kentucky has successfully met national standards, clinical guidelines and outcomes of care, based on the surveyor’s reviews. This recognition shows how PMC compares to other hospitals across the state.
Hospitals who receive these certifications have proven, by national standards, to have a quality program.
Patients looking to have orthopedic procedures can choose to stay close to home to receive care.
“This accreditation lets patients who are looking to have a procedure know that PMC’s quality program is nationally recognized and is among the best programs in the state,” said PMC Joint Commission Specialist, Sheila Belcher.
The Joint Commission has a rigorous set of standards for a hospital to meet. The on-site surveyors look at all process involved in the joint replacement and hip fracture procedures.
“Our staff strives every day to provide world-class quality health care. This certification can give patients confidence in PMC,” added Belcher.
Belcher stated the surveyors were extremely impressed with the program PMC offers. She said they were most impressed that PMC was able to provide such quality care and technology.
One surveyor indicated to Belcher, they only saw programs that mimicked ours in larger facilities.
“Upon final review, one of the surveyors told us he came to PMC to inspire us and he left after his review inspired by what we were doing,” said PMC Joint Commission/CMS Specialist, Stormie Adkins.
The surveyors were impressed by the excellent care PMC orthopedic patients received throughout the hospital.
“Our staff prides themselves on working together as a team. This accreditation is an example of a team working together to improve the care patients will receive at PMC,” said Stormie Adkins.
“The surveyor was most impressed with how people from all departments truly cared about the patient’s well-being and how hard they strived to meet these guidelines to provide the best care possible.”
Staff from surgery, anesthesia, orthopedic clinic staff, joint camp, pre-admit testing, lab, x-ray, physical therapy, orthopedic in-patient unit, emergency room and in-patient rehab underwent interviews with Joint Commission.

PMC helps restore patient’s lifestyle
ALL SMILES: Walter Wilson, pictured with Dr. Pugh, praised PMC for the excellent care he received during a recent knee replacement surgery. The 70-year-old South Williamson resident is now fully recovered and back to his active lifestyle.
PIKEVILLE — At 70 years old, Walter Wilson is an active grandfather of five, who is enjoying life with less pain than ever before thanks to knee replacement surgery performed at Pikeville Medical Center (PMC).
Dr. Kevin Pugh, PMC Orthopedic Surgeon, performed a partial knee replacement on Wilson in March.
Partial knee replacements are less invasive than total knee replacements and involve replacing only the damaged section of the knee. On average, Dr. Pugh performs between 350-400 total and partial knee replacements per year.
“Patients with issues limited to only one part of the knee may be candidates for partial knee replacement,” said Dr. Pugh. “In partial knee replacement, we conserve all of the natural ligaments of the knee, which in turn makes for a quicker recovery and a much more normal feeling knee.”
“I am very pleased with my surgery experience and outcome,” said Wilson. “During my visits and hospital stay at PMC, I never felt like a number, but rather received friendly care as well as professional treatment.”
After his father died at only 54 years old, Wilson knew he needed to exercise and lose weight to lead a healthier lifestyle.
He began walking and running and eventually started running marathons. On an average week, Wilson would run 35 miles. On training weeks, he would run up to 50 miles. Slowly, after undergoing surgery for a meniscus repair, he started experiencing knee pain.
“Runners are always hurting, always battling some type of pain, but the pain got so bad that I eventually didn’t even enjoy walking anymore,” said Wilson.
He continued to stay as active as possible by mowing the grass, weed eating and doing home repairs. It wasn’t until after an accident at home that his pain became unbearable.
“I was working on the roof, slid off and landed on my right leg,” said Wilson. “I could tell my knee was hurt, but I continued to work around the house as much as possible because my knee would just hurt and drive me crazy as soon as I stopped working. I finally called my doctor and told him it was time to get serious and X-ray my knees.”
The X-rays revealed bone-on-bone in both knees. He needed a referral to see an orthopedist and when given the choice, he chose Dr. Pugh.
“I’d done my research and talked with several people and felt most comfortable going to Dr. Pugh as opposed to traveling out of state,” said Wilson. “I’d heard great things about him and knew he had the experience I could trust.”
Wilson, now retired, has extensive experience working in the medical field as a therapist, administrator and rehabilitation counselor.
He spent years working with and developing systems of care for spinal cord injury rehabilitation, which led to tremendous interaction with all levels of medical and orthopedic care.
“I just wanted to share from my heart and background experience what I saw at PMC,” said Wilson. “While this surgery and hospital was new to me, I was impressed with many aspects. One significant observation being the smooth flow of care, from initial assessment to the day of surgery, beginning with valet parking and going all the way to discharge. Yes, I was anxious about the surgery, but every step along the way was well-managed, caring, relaxing and seemed to flow very well. All the staff was friendly and knew their job well.”
Now, only three months post-surgery, Wilson has made a full recovery and no longer suffers from debilitating knee pain. He credits his successful recovery to weekly home visits from PMC’s physical and occupational therapists.
“The physical and occupational therapists from PMC’s Home Health came to my house three times a week for two weeks and helped me so much,” said Wilson. “They checked my vitals, answered any questions I had and gave me the support I needed to heal properly. I was outside three weeks after surgery, mowing the grass again, working around my house, being active.”
Wilson continued, “The entire PMC team did a great job and I want to express my sincere appreciation for that. Everyone from Dr. Pugh and his Orthopedic team all the way to valet, pre-op, recovery room, home health, and physical and occupational therapy made me feel at ease and well cared for during my time at PMC, and that is an invaluable experience.”
Wilson plans on returning to PMC in November to have surgery on his shoulder and again in February to repair his other knee.
