Pikeville Medical Center announced today the new name for the much-anticipated Children’s Hospital now under construction.  Thanks to a generous donation to Pikeville Medical Center Foundation for Quality Healthcare from longtime PMC physicians Drs. R.V. and Jyothi Mettu, the hospital now bears the name “The Dr. R.V. and Jyothi Mettu Children’s Hospital.”

“The Mettu name has long been synonymous with hard work, dedication and quality healthcare,” explained Executive Director of the PMC Foundation for Quality Healthcare, Andrew H. Scott.  “Drs. R.V. and Jyothi Mettu have given decades of service to Eastern Kentucky, and Dr. Jyothi’s commitment to the children of our region is unmatched. Receiving this gift is humbling and marks the beginning of a bright and healthy future for our children’s hospital.”

Drs. R.V. and Jyothi Mettu’s donation of $1.5 million came after what they both said was a deep longing to make a contribution that would affect current and future generations of children across Eastern Kentucky.

“From the moment Dr. Jyothi first discussed the children’s hospital project with me, we knew we wanted to be involved,” said Dr. R.V. Mettu.  “We knew we were going to give financial support to a project, but we hadn’t decided which one.  As soon as we heard about plans for a children’s hospital at Pikeville Medical Center, our decision was made.”

“My husband knew I had been grieving since retiring from my pediatric practice,” explained Dr. Jyothi Mettu.  “It has been very hard to let go of having that close connection with kids and families.  He told me with this contribution, we would ensure that my legacy would last.  Through this donation, we will both be able to continue to help children and families in Eastern Kentucky long after we both are gone.”

The Mettus made their donation to the PMC Foundation for Quality Healthcare, a non-profit organization that helps secure donations to sustain, support and grow Pikeville Medical Center.  The PMC Foundation’s Executive Director Andrew H. Scott works with individual donors, corporations and community organizations who share PMC’s dedication to improving the health of southern Appalachia.

“We are so blessed to have Drs. R.V. and Jyothi Mettu in our PMC family and this gift will truly help children for many years to come,” explained PMC Vice President of the Board of Directors and CEO Donovan Blackburn.  “Through donations like this to the PMC Foundation, we are able to broaden the financial resources available to Pikeville Medical Center, allowing us to continue to plan and grow.”

“It’s a great day to also ‘Celebrate the Power of Rural’ by honoring the selfless, community-minded, can-do spirit that prevails in rural healthcare, bringing to light the unique healthcare challenges that rural citizens face.  We are blessed to make this announcement and showcase the efforts of our rural healthcare providers alongside Drs. R.V. and Jyothi Mettu on National Rural Health Day,”  said Blackburn.
