Walter E. May, President & CEO

Chairman of the Executive and Investment Committee

Walter E. May is a native of Pikeville, Kentucky, and has a long and distinguished record of community service. A life-long broadcaster, Mr. May is owner and Chairman of the Board of East Kentucky Broadcasting. He takes great pride in his service as Mayor of Pikeville, especially the fact that during his tenure the city was twice voted one of the "Best 100 Small Towns in America." A former President of the Kentucky Broadcasters Association and Chairman of the National Association of Broadcasters, Mr. May has applied the same drive and commitment that he employed in broadcasting to making Pikeville Medical Center the finest hospital in the world. During his 47 years on the Board of Directors, Pikeville Medical Center has grown from a small-town hospital to a nationally recognized medical center with state-of-the-art equipment and world class services.

Mr. May was elected Chairman of the Board in 1990, and has been very faithful to the hospital's mission "to provide quality regional health care in a Christian environment." His dedication to the hospital, Pikeville and Pike County are seen throughout the many areas that have benefited from his active participation. In 2007, Mr. May's dedication to Pikeville Medical Center and health care in general was recognized by the Kentucky Hospital Association with their Governance Award.

Mr. May and his wife, Pam, live in Pikeville, as do five of their six children.

Ronald Burchett, Vice President


20 years of service

Chairman of the Bylaws Committee, Compensation Committee, and the Corporate Compliance Committee

Ron Burchett is the Assistant Commonwealth Attorney for Pike County. He values his role on the Board of Directors as an extension of his service to his faith and our community. Mr. Burchett hopes to be a driving force in providing great medical service and a fair judicial system for all citizens.

Mr. Burchett's distinguished service to Pikeville Medical Center extends 18 years. An active member since 1993, he chairs two committees and serves as a member on several others. Mr. Burchett has a special interest in the treatment and recovery of drug and alcohol abusers.

Mr. Burchett, his wife Elizabeth and son, live in Gulnare, Kentucky.

Joe Dean Anderson, Secretary


35 years of service

Holds membership in the following committees: Executive and Investment, Joint Conference, Finance, Buildings and Grounds, Bylaws, Corporate Compliance & Long Range Planning

Mr. Anderson, a Pikeville, Kentucky native, retired from the Kentucky State Department of Transportation after many years of valued service to the citizens of the Commonwealth. Mr. Anderson was also the Assistant District Engineer for the Pikeville area. His responsibilities included traffic permits and planning. Mr. Anderson now operates his own civil engineering business. He and wife Peggy are the parents of two children.

Mr. Anderson has served on the Board of Directors for Pikeville Medical Center since 1978. Currently the board Secretary, Mr. Anderson has served as Vice-President and been active on several critical committees.

Aaron Crum, M.D., Chief of Staff

President of the Medical Executive Committee

Dr. Crum was born in Pikeville, KY and was a resident of Floyd County.† He has been a practicing OB/GYN in Pikeville since 2000.† He is a member of the physician staff at Pikeville Medical Centerís Womenís Care Center on Town Mountain Road. He previously served as Chief-of-Staff in 2008 and 2009.† Dr. Crum has been an active member of the Medical Executive Committee since 2005, a member of the Credentialing Committee in 2005 / 2006 and Chairman of the OB Committee. He has also provided services on the Volunteer Faculty at the University of Kentucky and the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Osteopathic School of Medicine. Dr. Crum resides in Pikeville with his wife Angelia and their two children Ryan and Emily.



TT Colley


23 years of service

Holds membership in the following committees: Nominating & Public Relations

Mr. Colley has spent his life as an entrepreneur and contributor to his community. Once a teacher, elected official, a coal operator and developer, Mr. Colley brings an extensive and varied experience to the Board of Directors. Following a stint in the US Navy, Mr. Colley graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Transylvania University. In 1957 he founded Colley Block Company.

Mr. Colley has seen many periods of growth at Pikeville Medical Center since joining the Board of Directors in 1990. He has played critical roles in fundraising and overseeing many of the hospital's construction projects. Mr. Colley says he couldn't be giving his time to a better cause than Pikeville Medical Center and its mission to provide "quality regional health care in a Christian environment."

David Collins


14 years of service

Holds membership in the following committees: Finance & Public Relations

Mr. Collins has served on the Pikeville Medical Center's Board of Directors for more than 10 years. He first served the board between 1990-1997 and has held his current position since 2006. "One of the things I like about serving on the hospital board is that you can see the progress you are making," Mr. Collins says.

An active member of Immanuel Baptist Church, he has served the congregation as church treasurer and as a trustee. Mr. Collins service to his community is long and distinguished. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees of Pikeville College and a guiding force on the Board of Directors for the Pike County Chamber of Commerce.

Currently, the Senior Managing Partner with the accounting firm, Collins & Love - Certified Public Accountants, Mr. Collins has had long associations with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Kentucky Society of CPAs, and the East Kentucky Society of CPAs.

Mr. Collins and wife Carolyn have two children.

Dennis Halbert, M.D.


21 years of service

Chairman of the Performance Improvement Committee

Holds membership in the following committees: Joint Conference, Buildings and Grounds, Ethics & Long Range Planning


Dr. Halbert is not only a practicing Radiologist at Pikeville Medical Center, but has been a dedicated member of the Board of Directors since 1992. A native of neighboring Floyd County, Dr. Halbert moved to Pikeville in 1985.

As a physician, Dr. Halbert lends an expertise to the medical issues considered by the Board of Directors. He shares great pride in the growth of Pikeville Medical Center and the advances of the Radiology Department.


Hobart Clay Johnson


22 years of service

Chairman of the Finance Committee

Holds membership in the following committee: Bylaws

Mr. Johnson is a Pikeville attorney and business man. A graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Louisville, School of Law, Mr. Johnson served in the US Air Force during the Korean War before returning to his native Pikeville.

A member of the Board of Directors since 1991, he serves as Chairman of the Finance Committee. Mr. Johnson is very proud of the role of Pikeville Medical Center and takes great pride in the growth of services and medical facilities provided by the hospital.

John LaBreche


20 years of service

Chairman of the Buildings and Grounds Committee

Holds membership in the following committees: Executive and Investment, Joint Conference, Finance, Nominating, Personnel, Christian Emphasis & Compensation

Mr. LaBreche is a retired supervisor with the US Department of Labor and Black Lung office in Pikeville, Kentucky. Mr. LaBreche, a graduate of Northern Michigan University, earned his master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University.

Joining the Board of Directors for Pikeville Medical Center in 1993, Mr.
LaBreche has been very active as either the chairman or member of various critical committees. With a goal of never being satisfied with the medical services offered to the community, Mr. LaBreche sees Pikeville Medical Center as a leader among state and national hospitals.

Alex Poulos, M.D.


15 years of service

Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee

Holds membership in the following committees: Executive and Investment, Joint Conference, Nominating, Performance Improvement, Buildings and Grounds, Bylaws & Physician Recruitment

Dr. Poulos is a native of Pikeville, Kentucky and a member of the medical staff of Pikeville Medical Center. Dr. Poulos is a partner in Pikeville Radiology and was a former hospital Chief of Staff. He has been a board member since 1998.

Dr. Poulos is an active member of the community and also serves on the Board of Directors for US Bank. He lives in Pikeville with his wife Sharon and their son.

Jo Nell Robinson


21 years of service

Chairman of the Nominating Committee

Holds membership in the following committees: Executive and Investment, Joint Conference & Personnel

Ms. Robinson has been a member of the Board of Directors since 1992, but has other ties that keep her closely associated with the hospital and its many activities. Ms. Robinson is the wife of Kaminski Robinson, who serves as the medical center's senior chaplain.

She has spent most of her life in Pikeville and Pike County. Ms. Robinson never fails to promote the hospital's quality of service and its commitment to the region. During her tenure, she has seen and contributed to the major expansion of services, facilities and staff who provide top rated medical care to our community and region.

Mary Rado Simpson, Ph.D.


7 years of service

Holds membership in the following committees: Performance Improvement & Personnel

Ms. Simpson began her service as a member of the board in 2006. She is the only nursing representative on the Pikeville Medical Center Board of Directors and is proud to be the voice of the hospital's nursing staff. Ms. Simpson is an associate professor of nursing and chairperson of the division of nursing at Pikeville College.

Ms. Simpson is a member of the Kentucky Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, Oncology Nursing Society and the Transcultural Nursing Society.

Sue Smallwood


14 years of service

Chairperson of the Personnel Committee; Public Relations Committee; and the Physician Recruitment Committee

Holds membership in the following committees: Executive and Investment, Joint Conference, Nominating, Corporate Compliance & Compensation

Ms. Smallwood served the City of Pikeville for 34 years prior to her retirement. She joined the Pikeville Medical Center Board of Directors in 1999.She worked diligently to help secure financing for the hospital's new tower and other capital projects.


J. Clint Martin

J. Clint Martin has been a resident of Pikeville since 1983. He graduated from the University of Kentuckyís College of Business with a BA in Accounting. He is the COO, Director and a Shareholder of 1st Guaranty Bank. Mr. Martin serves on the Finance Committee for the PMC Board of Directors. He is an active member of the First Baptist Church of Pikeville and is a member of Delta Tau Delta, Delta Epsilon Chapter.

Deborah Blackburn

Deborah Blackburn has a lifelong passion for community service. She has volunteered in eight different schools across Kentucky and been actively involved in parent teacher organizations , church, hospital and non-profit organization work. She has been honored for her many volunteer efforts and commitment to community theater. Mrs. Blackburn and her husband Donovan are active members of the Primitive Baptist Church.

Walter "Smokey" Blankenship - Emeritus


13 years of service

Holds membership in the following committees: Buildings and Grounds & Public Relations


Walter Blankenship, known affectionately by many as "Smokey," is recognized as an outstanding contributor to the community and Pikeville Medical Center. A World War II veteran and Pikeville College graduate, Mr. Blankenship coached basketball at Pikeville College for a year following his military service. He has held many important positions for the City of Pikeville, including Director of Parks, Superintendent of Public Works, City Commissioner and City Manager.

Mr. Blankenship has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2000. His faithful participation and concern for bettering his community has benefited Pikeville Medical Center and the citizens who now have access to better medical care.

Mr. Blankenship and his wife Grace live in Pikeville. His woodworking talents are exhibited at the downtown historical museum.

Judith Hinkle - Emeritus


16 years of service

Holds membership in the following committees: Finance, Ethics, Corporate Compliance, Public Relations & Long Range Planning

Ms. Hinkle has more than a decade of service to the Pikeville Medical Center Board of Directors. Named a board member in 1997, Ms. Hinkle believes her time spent on the board continues to be a positive influence on the community and the medical services offered to the citizens of our region. During her tenure, she has seen considerable growth at the hospital and looks forward to even greater services from the hospital.

Ms. Hinkle is active in her church and dedicated to her children, grandchildren and husband Doug.

Burlin Coleman - Emeritus


20 years of service

A native of Pike County, Mr. Coleman grew up at Upper John's Creek. Mr. Coleman retired as Chairman of the Board of the Community Trust Bank in 1994. But, Mr. Coleman came out of retirement just two years later to serve as President and CEO of the Pikeville National Corporation, now Community Trust Bancorp, Inc.

A member of the First Baptist Church of Pikeville, Mr. Coleman and wife Jean are the proud parents of two Pikeville physicians - Dr. Larry Coleman and Dr. Kay Hazelett.

Lacy Puckett - Emeritus


21 years of service

Mr. Puckett has served on the Pikeville Medical Center Board of Directors for nearly a quarter-century, joining the board in 1984. Mr. Puckett retired from Commonwealth Life Insurance Company following a lengthy career. He served the company as chairman of the advisory council and the leading manager of over-all performance for 16 years.

Mr. Puckett is an active member at Boldman Freewill Baptist Church. He and wife Anna Bell Puckett are the parents of three children.
