About Dr. Blackburn

Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) proudly announces the addition of John Blackburn, MD, anesthesiologist.

Dr. Blackburn received his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of Kentucky (UK) in Lexington, and his medical degree from the UK College of Medicine.

He completed his residency in anesthesia and perioperative medicine, as well as a critical care fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

Dr. Blackburn is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in anesthesiology and in critical care. His exam to become board certified in pain management is this September.

A career in anesthesiology offers Dr. Blackburn the acuity and type of hands-on care that he enjoys providing.

His interest in pain medicine comes from wanting to “help improve everyday quality of life as well as managing pain as part of end-of-life care,” he explained.

A number of people have positively influenced Dr. Blackburn throughout his medical education and training.

“I owe a great deal of gratitude to the Medical College of Georgia,” he said, “especially Dr. Mary Arthur and Dr. Manuel Castresana, who I continue to consult with from time to time.”

Dr. Blackburn continued, “However, no one has been more impactful than my parents, John George and Terresia Blackburn.”

Dr. Blackburn said his top priority is to provide quality care to his patients. “Beyond that, I look forward to finding other ways to positively contribute to both the hospital and the community,” he said.

Dr. Blackburn is happy to be returning to the area with his family.

“I am originally from this area and I was born at PMC back when it was Pikeville Methodist Hospital,” he said. “I attended Johns Creek Elementary and graduated from Pike Central High School in 1999.”

Dr. Blackburn is grateful for the opportunity to join PMC.

“I love my home state and there was no doubt I wanted to come back to Kentucky to live and work,” he said. “The opportunity to return to my hometown and serve eastern Kentucky in the very hospital where I was born seemed right from the start.”

When he’s not caring for patients, Dr. Blackburn is a big UK sports fan and routinely makes time to watch the Wildcats play.
