About Dr. Schaub

He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Complex General Surgical Oncology.

Dr. Schaub chose a career in surgical oncology based, in part, on the relationships it allows with his patients.

“Oncology allows me the opportunity to connect with patients through the lengthy process of cancer evaluation, treatment and follow-up. The population is aging and cancer is becoming more prevalent,” Dr. Schaub continued. “The need for advancements in cancer care through research and new treatment strategies is part of what drove me to the specialty.”

Dr. Schaub considers Dr. Roger Perry from Norfolk, Va. a professional mentor.

“In general surgery residency, Dr. Perry demonstrated patience, meticulous attention to detail, and dedication to on-going education and research. I observed how these traits positively impacted patients and resulted in excellent surgical outcomes.”

Dr. Schaub chose to come to PMC to continue his practice in Kentucky.

“I see an opportunity at Pikeville Medical Center to create a successful surgical oncology practice, build upon the pre-existing multidisciplinary team approach and to help expand the cancer services that are offered here,” Dr. Schaub explained. “I want to help integrate residents and medical students from the neighboring medical school into research efforts and to increase opportunities for patients to enroll in oncology clinical trials.”

Dr. Schaub said his patients can expect him to spend a lot of time with them.

“I tend to spend plenty of time with everyone, and I always make certain to answer everyone’s questions. A new cancer diagnosis presents many challenges and uncertainties, and I try my best to allay fears and to help people understand what to expect moving forward with treatment.”

When he’s not caring for patients, Dr. Schaub spends most of his free time with his wife and three children. He and his wife Amy have been married for 15 years and together they have a son, age 11, and two daughters, ages eight and four. He also enjoys photography, playing chess and the ukulele.

‘To whom much is given much is expected’: Former cancer patient of Dr. Lavigne carrying out late brother’s wishes

Cancer survivors often come out the other side of the fight with a renewed purpose. This was definitely true for Tammy Schroder, former patient of Dr. Ruth Lavigne, Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) Radiation Oncologist. This purpose inspired her brother, Bob Guthier, who was losing his own fight with cancer, to do as she had done.
