About heart surgery
According to the National Institutes of Health, the first successful open-heart operation on a person using a heart-lung machine was performed in Philadelphia in May 1953. This medical breakthrough launched a world of possibilities for saving lives.
More than 65 years later, heart care has continued to evolve and improve. Medical science knows vastly more about the heart and circulatory system. Diagnostic imaging – from X-rays to MRIs to echocardiograms – has gone digital. And surgeons now have an amazing array of tools, technology and techniques that were previously unimaginable.
Cardiovascular surgery at the Heart & Vascular Institute of Eastern Kentucky
Pikeville Medical Center is part of the proud history of heart treatment. Through the years, we’ve built state-of-the-art facilities, recruited expert physicians and staff, and invested in the most advanced equipment. Today, patients have more personalized options instead of a standard, one-size-fits-all approach.
Cardiac surgery is used to correct problems in the heart muscle and tissues, arteries, aorta, valves and other structures of the chest. While traditional open-heart surgery is still the best approach for many, increasing numbers of cardiac patients are able to take advantage of the newer, minimally- invasive methods performed by our team.
For appropriate patients, these newer techniques mean smaller incisions, less blood loss, less pain, shorter hospital stays, quicker recoveries and smaller, less noticeable scars.
Minimally-invasive cardiac surgeries at the Heart & Vascular Institute of Eastern Kentucky include:
