The Eastern Kentucky Advanced Women’s Care Center at Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) utilizes the Da Vinci Surgical System, a robotic system designed to facilitate surgeries using a minimally invasive approach. PMC OB-GYN physicians Angela Maggard, MD and Malisa Moss, DO perform complex procedures using the da Vinci system. Patients typically see benefits through this type of surgery with shorter hospital stays, less pain and scarring, less risk of infection and less blood loss.

The Da Vinci Surgical System gives the surgeon an advanced set of instruments, including a surgeon console, a patient-side cart and a vision cart. The robot mimics the surgeon’s hand movements at the console in real time, bending and rotating the instruments, moving like a human hand but with a greater range of motion. The vision cart delivers a high-definition view of the surgical area, making it possible for surgeons to operate through one or a few small, minimally invasive incisions.

Dr. Maggard performed her 100th surgery using the Da Vinci system at the beginning of November and is quickly approaching 120.
