Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) recently achieved National Accreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).

MBSAQIP is a joint program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

This designation effectively highlights PMC’s commitment to providing safe, high-quality bariatric surgical care, in-depth education, and support.

PMC had a national team of surveyors conduct a thorough review of the practices performed for bariatric patients.

To achieve this accreditation, PMC met a rigorous set of standards.

Some of the standards include a commitment to excellence in the care of bariatric patients, a surgeon whose primary focus is bariatric surgery and who continually completes medical education pertaining to the most advanced treatments in weight loss surgery, offers support groups for patients and long –term patient follow- up care that consistently monitors patient results.

Patients looking to have bariatric surgery can elect to travel anywhere to receive care.

“This accreditation lets patients who are looking to have a procedure, that PMC’s quality program is nationally recognized and meets the highest standards for patient safety and quality care,” said PMC Bariatric Practice Manager, Susanna Potter.

“Meeting these standards ensures patients that they will receive a quality program, not just a surgical procedure,” added Potter.

She says this improves patient outcomes and long term success.

PMC’s Weight Loss Center is the region’s most comprehensive program offering a multi-disciplinary team that works together, to achieve excellent results.

“I am proud to announce that we have been awarded the national title of ‘Comprehensive Accredited Bariatric Center’ following a rigorous review of our outcomes and our program in general,” said PMC Bariatric Surgeon, Amy Johnson, MD. “In our seventh accredited year, we continue to have a comprehensive program including dieticians, nurse practitioners, a certified bariatric nurse coordinator and a psychologist who help take care of our patients.”

She says being an accredited center requires an extremely high level of commitment from all facets of the team and dedication from hospital administration and all departments who provide care to bariatric patients.

“The bottom line of the accreditation program is to ensure the very best care and excellent outcomes for our patients,” said Dr. Johnson.

PMC offers Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, and Revisional Surgery and very thorough pre-operative and post-operative processes to ensure your long term success after surgery.
