Pikeville Medical Center Graduate Medical Education

In Collaboration With The University Of Kentucky College Of Medicine

Pikeville Medical Center (PMC), in collaboration with the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, is committed to graduate medical education as a core part of our mission to provide high-quality, patient-centered care and improve the health of the communities we serve.

Our three-year, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited categorical Internal Medicine Residency Program, sponsored by UK Graduate Medical Education (UK GME), is based at Pikeville Medical Center and will be accepting 4 residents per year with a maximum of 12 residents. Pikeville Medical Center is a 348-bed regional referral center serving Eastern Kentucky, Southern West Virginia, and Western Virginia. Residents gain advanced clinical training in a diverse, high-acuity patient population, managing complex chronic diseases shaped by socioeconomic disparities and limited healthcare access.

With a focus on evidence-based medicine, compassionate care, and health disparities, our program prepares skilled and dedicated physicians to address the critical physician shortages in Appalachia, with expertise in advanced cardiovascular disease, respiratory illnesses, diabetes-related complications, and substance use disorders.

Residency is a time of immense growth—personally, professionally, and clinically. Over the next three years, you will develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage complex medical conditions, lead teams, and make a lasting impact on your patients and community.

Some of you already know your path—whether it’s pursuing fellowship training, working as a hospitalist, or leading a primary care practice. Others may still be exploring the vast possibilities within internal medicine. Wherever you are in that journey, we are here to support you.

So, what’s special about this program?

Our goal is to prepare you for independent practice in any setting. We emphasize autonomy, mentorship, and hands-on learning from day one, ensuring that you develop the critical thinking and clinical judgment necessary to excel as an internist.

Training at Pikeville Medical Center, a 348-bed referral center, you will work with a medically complex, underserved patient population across Eastern Kentucky, Southern West Virginia, and Western Virginia. You will gain exposure to diverse pathology and real-world medicine, managing conditions that are often more advanced than those seen in urban settings. This is a high-acuity, high-impact learning environment where you will play an active role in patient care from the start.

What will your training look like?

Progressive autonomy: We believe in structured independence—allowing you to take on increasing responsibility with appropriate guidance from experienced faculty.

Comprehensive clinical exposure: Training in inpatient medicine, critical care, ambulatory care, and subspecialties will equip you with a strong foundation for any career path.

Mentorship and career guidance: Our faculty are deeply invested in your success, helping you navigate both residency and your future career decisions.

An opportunity to contribute: As part of our inaugural class, you will help shape the program’s culture and traditions, leaving a legacy for future residents.

What kind of learning environment can you expect?

We are committed to fostering a rigorous yet supportive training environment—one that challenges you to grow while ensuring you always have the guidance you need.

This is not just about completing residency. It’s about developing the skills, relationships, and confidence to become the physician you want to be. We are here to help you achieve that, through structured learning, meaningful mentorship, and a focus on patient-centered care.

Why train in Pikeville?

Pikeville Medical Center serves a community that deeply values its physicians. Here, you will not only develop the clinical skills necessary for independent practice but also experience the profound impact you can have as a physician in an underserved region. The training here will prepare you for any practice setting—whether you choose rural medicine, academic medicine, primary care, hospitalist work, or fellowship training.

If this sounds like the right place for you, I look forward to welcoming you to our team.

Sincerely,
Garred Ross Cline, DO, FACP
